Statement | Where 9/11 happened - Neil Dern - artmedia GALLERY - Miami FL - 305
ND 02, Posters of loved ones missing in aftermath of WTC destruction,National 9/11 Museum, 2014

Working in financial markets for almost my entire career, the World Trade Center complex played a large part in my life. On 9/11/2001, that life came to a crashing halt. The destruction of the Twin Towers changed my very existence. I was fortunate to survive this day.

I did not wish to portray the tragedy of that day in this project. While I cannot separate this from the events, I want people to see a different side of what transpired. As I look at the story these pictures tell, I see the memories of the Twin Towers as they appeared on the skyline of New York City, and the reality of what happened when they came down. In abstract, the Twin Towers are seen as reflections in the new buildings. The construction of the Freedom Tower is culminated by the magnificent structure and what it represents. And then there is the Museum.

In principal, my idea was to use my camera to document an act against mankind. Each picture resonates different views. I chose a medium of black and white for the main body of work because of the power I believe the images show. I want the viewer to feel both the memory of the event, and the reality of what happened from the perspective of today. The pictures also allow intellectual examination while permitting viewers to feel the full range of emotions associated with the events. Furthermore, I have included a color projection in the exhibition that offers another point of view, closer to chronology as a more common way that history is narrated.

I sincerely hope that this body of work shows the resilience of the American people and that the victims of the massacre of 9/11 will be forever remembered.
