Taxidermy Series explores the personal spaces of those who collect taxidermy, documenting the unique ways they surround themselves with preserved nature. I have always been intrigued by how people curate their environments, and this project offers a rare glimpse into a world that is both private and revealing. The subject matter, while delicate, has presented its challenges; gaining access to these spaces has been a process that requires trust. I am continually surprised and grateful for the openness of those who have allowed me into their homes and have found most collectors share a deep sense of pride, love, and respect for the animals they possess.
Since 1978 I have been documenting the world around me with an evolving approach. My earlier work was printed on traditional gelatin silver paper, then hand-colored with photographic oils. With this current series, I have embraced the opportunities of digital photography, allowing me to blend the precision of modern techniques with the tactile craft of hand-coloring. Each photograph is made unique by this process, and the careful application of color adds a layer of storytelling, merging reality with fiction and inviting viewers to step into the world I witness.
