Press Release | The Opa-Locka Effect, Jorge Sánchez - artmedia GALLERY - Miami FL
Untitled #25, from the series 6.9 or Lless, 2011-2014

Artmedia Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition by Jorge Sánchez titled The Opa-Locka Effect. His installation focuses on a series of images aptly referred to as "6.9 or Less,” taken between 2011 and 2014.

The series brings together a comprehensive registry of buildings from the so-called industrial zone north of Miami, in particular the city of Opa-Locka. The images were taken by the artist on his daily journey of approximately 6.9 miles, which spans the distance between his home and workplace, hence the title of the set.

The operation applied by Sánchez in constructing this record could be connected to the principle of typology, which functions in different sciences such as the study and classification of types. In this case, the relationship is made possible by the large number of buildings photographed, the repeated use of the same point of view of the camera, and the economy of the visual images, concentrated in the description of the buildings. All traits that summarize, simultaneously, both the methodology applied by the artist and the main characteristics of his body of work.

It is, additionally, important to emphasize that Sánchez has made a free use of the principle of typology, by effectively polluting it with the strategies of the artistic production. This is evident in the understanding of the buildings as undressed cubic volumes of geometry, descendants from sculptural minimalism; also, in the exploration of color and their application in visual rhythmic structures that invokes the legacy of the pictorial constructivist tradition, but from a clear awareness of the use of the camera as a working tool. On these premises, Sánchez mobilizes ideas on the socio-cultural implications of the architecture in the context of Miami.
