Artmedia Gallery is proud to present a selection from an extensive photographic work made by G. A. Jakubovics in Miami during the last thee years. Titled as Seeking a Code. Photographs of Miami, this exhibition inscribes itself into the group of projects that Artmedia Gallery has included in its program of exhibits dedicated to exploring the young, multiphase, socially contradictory, multicultural, and insufficiently known Miami as a cosmopolitan emergent city in the contemporary global world.

Seeking a Code resembles an itinerary the photographer advanced comprehending the urbanized Miami County as a big metropolis regardless its fragmented geopolitical administration. He recorded public and private spaces from Coconut Grove to Hialeah, Allapattah to Coral Gables, Miami Beach to West Miami, with the confessed purpose to compile evidences of a hidden code for understanding the city. Finally, he has installed his pictures in two different strategical ways.

Images of interior spaces in medium format have been displayed along five walls of the gallery. They are different enough to emphasize not only the goal expressed by the author in the title of the exhibition but also the implicit difficulties in pursuing it.  A line of small pictures of interior spaces of Miami from the 1930s to 1950s has been placed on the two biggest walls under the photographs mentioned before. All of them create a suggestive relationship between archival and contemporary photographs on the subject and puts in discussion the changes over time.

Urban views, accompanied by details of the sky and different kind of surfaces which seem abstract or semi-abstract compositions, have been arranged on a wall as a polyptych which also has some empty spaces. Probably it helps the rest of the exhibition to achieve the aim of an elaborate visual proposal very far from the stereotypical and simplistic vision of Miami as the luxury both resort and mall.

About the artist

G.A. Jakubovics studied Advertising & Marketing at the Instituto Universitario Nuevas Profesiones (IUNP), Caracas, from 1992 to 1995. Studied black & white photography techniques between 1994 and 1995. Took a course in Photoshop at Pre-print Company, Caracas, 1995. He has worked for many years as an expert on pre-press production and archival fine art printing. He has practiced photography for a long time. Seeking a Code. Photographs of  Miami is his first exhibition.

About the curator

José Antonio Navarrete has developed an extensive international career as a curator, researcher, and critic of visual arts and culture. His lengthy bibliography focuses on topics of modern and contemporary art, with emphasis on how media technology has affected and transformed art practices. During this decade, he has also exhibited his artistic work.

Artmedia Gallery was founded in 2012. With a location in Wynwood Art District, Miami, Florida, the gallery has the mission to explore the vast possibilities of the expanded notion of art through media technology, with photography and video as its core interest.
