Press Release | Metaphors of the Emergency | Miami New Media Festival | Miami FL

Artmedia Gallery is proud to present a part of the program of the Miami New Media Festival 2017 in a conjoined effort with arts connection, promoter and organizer of the event. The gallery holds an adapted version of the video group show Metaphors of the Emergency, curated by Gerardo Zavarce and installed by Diego Damas, which includes artworks by seven Venezuelan contemporary artists: Miguel Braceli, Beto Gutiérrez, Consuelo Méndez, Teresa Mulet, Erika Ordosgoitti, Lucía Pizzani, and Marcos Temoche. Besides, the gallery exhibits the final selection of the Open Call composed of thirty-five videos by artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, The United States, and Venezuela. This selection has been arranged in two loop sets titled as Video Art “Divergent Narrative” and Video Animation “Animatic 0.1” respectively.

In particular, Metaphors of the Emergency is an astonishing exhibition that examines the current economic, social, and political crisis of a country —Venezuela in this case— and proposes new ways to imagine and think about history and present. According to Zavarce,

“Metaphors of the emergency are those that come to life when there are no more recognizable references or familiar territories. They are the images of disenchantment, those that occur when everything has been lost and the vacuous horror precipitates; then, there is only the emergence of a community of sense reconstructed as language and as the possibility of that to come.”

The segment of the Miami New Media Festival program exhibited at artmedia GALLERY is a sample of the most recent researches and experimentations on video art and video animation in contemporary art and culture, as well as the possibilities that video has as a tool for reinventing cultural codes.
